Yeison Landero: The Heir to the Cumbia of the Heart
From the Montes de María to the World
From the heart of the Montes de María region on Colombia's Caribbean coast, the birthplace of Cumbia, Yeison Landero has emerged as one of the genre's leading figures worldwide. Grandson of the legendary Andrés Landero, the King of Cumbia, Yeison carries not only his surname but also the fire of a tradition that transcends borders.
At the age of seven, he received his first accordion from his grandfather Andrés, becoming the only member of the family chosen to learn directly from him. Under his guidance, he inherited not only that musical treasure but also the soul of a minstrel and the virtuosity of the instrument. From then on, his path was marked by a clear mission: to preserve, innovate, and bring Cumbia to new audiences.
His music has resonated on stages such as The Kennedy Center (Washington, D.C.), The Hollywood Bowl (Los Angeles), The Ford Theatre (Los Angeles), the Guadalajara International Book Fair (Guadalajara, Mexico), the National Auditorium (Mexico City), and the Barranquilla Carnival Orchestra Festival, where he received the Congo de Oro award in 2023. He also represented Colombia at the 2021 Dubai World Expo and the COP16 World Climate Summit in 2024, reaffirming the power of Cumbia as a symbol of identity and resistance. In 2025, he was nominated for a Latin Grammy with Los Kumbia Stars for the song "Baila Kolombia" in the Best Cumbia/Vallenato Album category, and in October of that year, he participated in the WOMEX showcase, the world's most important global music expo.

A Living Tradition
in his Music
Born and raised in San Jacinto, Bolívar (Colombia), Yeison grew up surrounded by music and tradition. His home was a meeting place for great masters of folklore such as Enrique Díaz, Alfredo Gutiérrez, Lisandro Meza, Calixto Ochoa, Adolfo Pacheco, and Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto.
His first group was created by his own grandfather: Los Nietos de Andrés Landero, along with his sister, with whom he took La Cumbia to festivals and fairs throughout Colombia.
Later he studied music at the School of Fine Arts in Cartagena and pursued a law degree at the University of Cartagena, but his passion for music led him to dedicate his entire life to Cumbia.
In his first album, “Landero Vive,” he paid homage to his grandfather's legacy with new arrangements of his hits and previously unreleased tracks such as Noche de Cumbia, La Época de Oro, and Manojo de Vela. With this work, he reaffirmed his mission: to keep the tradition alive and project it into the future.
